What Are the Steps for Switching Dog Food?

Proper Guide to Switching Dog Food: Follow the 7-Day Transition Method

When a dog eats the same type of food for a long time, the digestive enzymes secreted by its intestines and stomach become relatively specific, leading to what is known as a sensitive stomach. It takes time for the dog to adapt to new food. Frequent or abrupt food changes can easily cause digestive issues such as diarrhea. Therefore, the 7-day transition method should be used when switching your dog’s food. The principle is to gradually replace a portion of the old food with the new food, allowing enough time for your dog’s taste preferences and digestive system to adjust to the new diet.
  • Day 1: Replace 25% of the original food with new food
  • Day 3: Replace 50% of the original food with new food
  • Day 5: Replace 75% of the original food with new food
  • Day 7: Feed 100% new food
